Tour de France GC odds: Should you bet?

July 6, 2007

Last year, after Floyd Landis cracked on stage 16 from Bourg-d’Oisans to La Toussuire and lost around 11 minutes, Eddy Merckx went to the bookies and placed 100.00 Euros bet on Floyd to be the next Tour de France winner.

Whether he purely believed in him or he had some “from inside the team” information from his son, Alex Merckx, who was then Floyd’s team-mate, Eddy was right. The next day Floyd ripped the field apart in one of the most exciting solo performances of all time. However, I haven’t found out whether Eddy will have to return his money if Floyd Landis is stripped of his title for doping, a decision that should be taken around this time.

These days, cycling can be a tricky sport to bet on since what you see may not be what you get…in the long run. But I still believe that betting on Tour de France general classification is one of the best ways to prove to others your cycling knowledge.

You might want to bet only with your buddies in your office or you can place a bet with sportsbooks like Bodog or Sportbet that offer specific odds on certain riders, or you can bet the field.

In both sportsbooks Vinokourov is the clear favorite. They also share opinions about the next two biggest favorites for the overall – Alejandro Valverde and Vino’s team-mate Andreas Kloden. Then the best from the rest according to these sportsbooks are Levi Leipheimer and Carlos Sastre.

Go and check out the odds in detail, then make sure to place your money on more than one rider. That way you are sort of “insuring” your money against bad crashes or even doping scandals. Good luck!
