Columbus Blue Jackets at Los Angeles Kings

October 31, 2007

The Columbus Blue Jackets and the Los Angeles Kings, two teams that were league doormats last season but have both shown signs of significant improvement so far in the 2007-08 NHL campaign, clash tonight at the Staples Center.

Head-to-head, the Kings are 6-2-0-2 over the past 10 meetings with the Blue Jackets. The teams last met March 17, when LA won 5-3 on home ice.

Columbus (6-3-1) beat the San Jose Sharks 2-1 in their last game on Saturday, while LA (6-6-0) dropped the Edmonton Oilers 4-1 at home on Saturday.

Columbus will start Pascal Leclaire in net, while LA will go with hot rookie Jason Labarbera.

LA is a 135-moneyline favorite at Bodog Life. The over/under is 5.5.

Canucks vs Predators

October 31, 2007

Game: Thurs, Nov 1, 2007 7:05 PM ET
Stay tuned to BodogLife for odds.

The Vancouver Canucks (5-7) will host the Nashville Predators (4-7), at G.M. Place, for some hard hitting NHL action.

The Vancouver Canucks are playing another home game where they’ve won only 1 game. The Canucks were beaten 2-3, by the Red Wings, their last time at home. The Nucks have the edge over the Preds in offense, defense, power play, and they’re better at killing penalties. Even though the Canucks have the edge over the Preds in offense, it doesn’t mean they’re banging goals in left and right. The Nucks are only averaging 2 goals a game, while they allow 3 goals a game. Goalie Roberto Luongo is playing below average with a 4-7 record and a 2.92 GAA. This is not his fault alone, the Nucks have poor defense along with the habit of spending alot of time in the penalty box.

The Nashville Predators started this year off well, but then went on a serious downward incline. They’re 2-8 in their last 10 games. They don’t have any offense, besides David Legwand who leads with 9 points. They don’t have much of a power play at all. Their goaltender needs a wake up call, Chris Mason is currently 2-7 with a 3.89 GAA. If you ask me they should play backup Dan Ellis who’s 2-0 with a 1.89 GAA and a shutout.

Bottom Line: The Canucks should be able to tack on a home win against a pitiful Nashville team. Lets hope the Preds spend a lot of time in the penalty box, so the Canucks can score. If the Nucks don’t win, I’m off the band wagon. GO CANUCKS! To bet the NHL check out BodogLife now.

Detroit Red Wings at Edmonton Oilers

October 30, 2007

The red-hot Red Wings will have back-up Chris Osgood in net when they face the struggling Edmonton Oilers Tuesday night.

The Oilers have actually been the dominant team over the past 10 games head-to-head, compiling a 7-3 record against the Wings. The teams last met on Oct. 8, when Detroit won 4-2 on home ice.

Detroit (9-2-1) last played against the Canucks in Vancouver on Sunday, winning 3-2, while Edmonton (5-7-0) beat the Anaheim Ducks on Sunday, also 3-2.

Detroit’s starting goalie, Dominik Hasek, is out one to two weeks with a sore hip. He is not expected to play on the Red Wings’ current road trip.

Edmonton is 4-1 SU in its past five home games against Detroit.

Betting Line: The Red Wings are a 195-moneyline favorite at BookMaker. The over/under is 5½.

Mavericks vs Cavaliers

The Cleveland Cavaliers start the 2007 NBA season hosting the Dallas Mavericks, at the Quicken Loans Arena.

The Cleveland Cavaliers are coming off their first trip to the Finals and they’re looking to make their way back. The Cavs lost big man Scott Pollard to free agency and failed to grab anyone in the draft. They will still be in great shape with LeBron James, Larry Hughes, Zydrunas Iigauskas, Drew Gooden. Even though James can do most of the work himself, he’s got a solid starting cast behind him. The starting line up for the Cavs will be G Daniel Gibson, G Aleksandar Pavlovic, F Drew Gooden, F LeBron James and C Zydrunas Ilgauskas.

The Dallas Mavericks made a huge improvement with signing of power forward Juan Howard. Howard will come off the bench for Dirk Nowitzki, which will help tremendously because when he’s on the bench, opponents catch up. The Mavs bench is stacked with players that can come in and help, Jerry Stackhouse and Jason Terry will be able to hold their own when the starters need a break. Big man Gana Diop is the only healthy center, but has no help off the bench. DJ Mbenga is still injured and not ready to play. The starting line up for the Mavs will be G Jason Terry, G Devin Harris, F Dirk Nowitzki, F Josh Howard and C DeSagana Diop.

Bottom Line: The Mavs are going to come out strong to prove that they shouln’t have been knocked out early in last year’s playoffs. Let’s go Mavericks! To bet the NBA go to BodogLife now.

The Minnesota Wild will host the Pittsburgh Penguins, at the Xcel Energy Center.

The Minnesota Wild are one of the hottest teams in the NHL right now. Besides boasting one of the stingiest defenses and best penalty kills, they have a wall in front of their net. Goalie Niklas Backstrom is 5-1 with 2 shutouts, and a 2.00 GAA. Back up Josh Harding is 2-1 with 1 shutout and a 2.00 GAA. When you have a great defense and great goaltending, you’re well on your way. Pierre-Marc Bouchard leads the Wild with 11 points and Brian Rolston has the most shots on net, 44.

The Pittsburgh Penguins are just the opposite of the Wild. They’ve got an awful defense that allows an average 3 goals a game and they let their opponents pepper the net with shots. Their goalie Marc-Andre Fleury is 4-4 with a 3.00 GAA, combining for a .892 save percentage. The Pens have the 5th best power play in the NHL. Top producers for the Pens are Sid the Kid, with 13 points, and Evgeni Malkin leads with 35 shots on net.

Bottom Line: The Wild are too aggressive for the fragile Penguins. They should be able to score on the Pens even with scoring trouble. The Wild are perfect at home so far. Go Wild! To bet the NHL check out BodogLife now.

Chargers vs Texans

The San Diego Chargers (3-3) will welcome in the Houston Texans (3-4) to Qualcomm Stadium for Week 8 NFL action.

The San Diego Chargers are coming off their Bye Week and their fresh and ready to take on the Texans. Before the Bye Week they beat the Raiders 28-14 in which RB Ladainian Thomlinson rushed for 4 TDs. He should do just as well against the Texans who are allowing an average 122 yards per game, 20th worst in NFL. WR A.Gates leads with 43 catches for 547 YDS along with 3 TDs and WR V.Jackson has 20 catches for 320 YDS and 2 TDs. The Chargers are 2-0 against the Texans all time.

The Houston Texans are coming off a disappointing loss to the Titans after scoring 29 fourth quarter points, only to be out kicked by Rob Bironas who kicked a NFL record 8 field goals. The Texans back up QB Sage Rosenfels was 22-35 for 290 YDS with 4 TDs and 3 INT. He is the 4th QB in NFL history to have 4 TDs in the fourth quarter . The Texans running backs aren’t getting it done, as they’ve combined for only 2 TDs in 7 games. Same goes for their recieving core, they’ve got a total of 4 TDs this year.

Bottom Line: The San Diego Chargers will want to win for their fans who are dealing with the devastating fires. The Chargers will burn up the Texans! To bet the NFL go to BodogLife now.

Philadelphia Flyers at Florida Panthers

October 24, 2007

Goaltender Martin Biron is expected to make his eighth-straight start when the Philadelphia Flyers face the Florida Panthers Wednesday night.

Biron was named one of the NHL’s Three Stars of the Week after getting three wins – including two shutouts – with a 0.66 goals-against average and a .982 save percentage in three starts.

Biron, second in the NHL in save percentage (.952) and third in goals-against average (1.57), is a big reason why the Flyers are 6-1, first in the Atlantic Division with 12 points and second overall in the Eastern Conference.

Florida will start Tomas Vokoun, who sports a 2.98 goals-against average and a .913 save percentage.

The teams are nearly even head-to-head, with Philadelphia 5-4-0-1 and Florida 5-3-0-2 over the past 10 games. The teams last met March 20, 2007, a 4-1 Florida win in Philadelphia. Philadelphia is 9-2-1 SU in its past 12 games on the road against Florida.

The Flyers beat the Carolina Hurricanes 3-2 in their last game on Saturday, while the Panthers lost 4-1 in Ottawa on Saturday.

Neither team has any significant injuries.

Betting Line: The Flyers are a 125-moneyline favorite at BetUS. The over/under is 5½.

Steelers vs Bengals

October 24, 2007

By Scott Burgess
Game: Sun, Oct 28, 2007 1:00 PM ET

The Cincinnati Bengals (+4) will welcome the Pittsburgh Steelers (-4) to the Paul Brown Stadium for Week 8 NFL action.

The Pittsburgh Steelers (4-2) are coming off a disappointing loss in week 7 to the Denver Broncos. The Steelers scored 21 points to tie the game in the fourth, but the Steelers defense allowed the Broncos to get to the 49 yard line and make the winning field goal. QB B.Roethlisberger is currently 105-166 for 1,303 YDS and 13 TDs. Big Ben is a perfect 8-0 when playing in his hometown of Ohio. The Steelers rushing game is good with W.Parker and N.Davenport pounding the ball down the field. Parker has four straight games with a touchdown. WR S.Holmes has 20 catches for 339 YDS and 4 TDs, while H.Miller has 22 catches for 291 YDS and 4 TD.

The Cincinnati Bengals (2-4) improved last week with a win over the N.Y. Jets, 38-31. The good news for the Bengals is that their injured O-Line will be fully fit to take to the field. QB Carson Palmer threw the ball 21 times last week but the biggest contributor in TDs was reserve RB Kenny Watson who had 31 carries for 130 YDS with 3 TDs.
Bottom Line: The Bengals aren’t going to be able to run the ball against the Steelers defense. The Steelers are going to take advantage of the Bengals poor pass defense which is ranked 27th in the league.

It’s another loss for the Bengals! To bet the NFL check out BodogLife now.

Nashville Predators at Los Angeles Kings

October 23, 2007

Betting Line: Kings -125

Two struggling NHL teams clash tonight when the Nashville Predators visit the Los Angeles Kings at the Staples Center.

The Predators (2-5-0) have been the worst of the two lately, dropping five straight games. Nashville is also winless in its past five on the road. The Kings are showing signs of improvement, winning two of their past three games. Nashville is coming off a 3-0 loss against the Sharks in San Jose Saturday night, while Los Angeles beat the Canucks in Vancouver 4-2 last Friday.

Head-to-head, the teams are even, each picking up five wins in the past 10 meetings. In their last game on March 3, 2007, the Predators doubled the Kings 6-3 in LA.

The Predators reportedly may start back-up goalie Dan Ellis tonight, while the Kings are expected to go with rookie Jason Labarbera, who won Friday in Vancouver.

Canucks vs Red Wings

October 23, 2007

By Scott Burgess
Game: Wed, Oct 24, 2007 7:30 PM ET

The Detroit Red Wings will host the Vancouver Canucks, on Wednesday, at Joe Louis Arena.

The Detroit Red Wings are always a team with great offense, defense and nothings different this year. Detroit’s coming off a road trip that had a 3-1 win record and their happy to be home where they’re 3-1. Henrik Zetterberg is by far the best producer for the Wings with 17 points and he leads with 42 shots on net. When you shoot that much your bound to score. The only things the Wings need to work on are their power play. Their defense is tops at blocking shots and killing penalties. Goalie Dominik Hasek is 3-3 with a 2.79 GAA.

The Vancouver Canucks are in trouble this year and they know it. They can’t seem to stay out of the penalty box, thay can’t win face offs and goaltender Roberto Luongo is anything but spectacular. He’s currently 3-5 with a 3.00 GAA. In fact in 8 games he’s let in 28 goals. The only two things going for the Canucks is their power play which seems to be the only way they can score and their 3-1 road record.

Bottom Line: The Red Wings have too much offense for a disheveled Canuck defense. Luongo can only hold on so long before the pucks start going in the net. The Canucks will definitely need to stay out of the penalty box. The Red Wings will take this one!
