U.S. Open Tennis 2010 – Recap Of Days 10 and 12

September 16, 2010

Day 10 Review

The wind was once again a major factor that perhaps influenced some of the outcomes and significantly influenced the level of play. There were wind gusts between 25 and 30 miles per hour, for most of the day. On Arthur Ashe Stadium, where all of the important singles matches were played, the wind was also the strongest.

Between Russian Vera Zvonareva and Estonian Kaia Kanepi was the first singles quarterfinal match on Ashe Stadium. Both players faced not just the wind but also nerves, looking for a first time appearance in the semifinals. With the wind, the big hitting Estonian struggled and had 60 unforced errors while the Russian only had 28 unforced errors. With a very tough second set that lasted for more than 70 minutes, Zvonareva was more steady and eventually won the match 6-3 7-5.

In the first men’s quarterfinal match of the day, Novak Djokovic comfortably defeated the struggling Frenchman Gael Monfils 7-6(2) 6-1 6-2.

First seed Caroline Wozniacki took out Dominika Cibulkova 6-2 7-5 in the second women’s quarterfinal match of the day, in the evening session. Standing barely 5’3” tall, for her small stature, Cibulkova packed quite a big punch, and it seemed that the match would go to three sets after she had chances to take the second set to a tiebreak. Both players often had to toss and catch the ball several times before finally serving it, as the wind was really strong. Several times throughout the match, flying paper, towels, and other debris also interrupted play.

In a highly anticipated match, Roger Federer closed out the evening session that ended rather routinely. To advance to the semifinal, Federer took out Robin Soderling 6-4 6-4 7-5. Surprisingly, than serve of the big swinging Swede, Federer’s serve was much more effective. In fact, while Soderling served 22 unreturned serves, Federer hit 43 unreturned serves.

Day 11

Between Mikhail Youzhny and Stanislas Wawrinka was the first quarterfinal match, which was a real battle that tested each player’s mental and physical toughness. Both players each won 154 points, as the match was dead even. However, after four intense hours, with a 3-6 7-6(7) 3-6 6-3 6-3 victory, the Russian Youzhny celebrated to advance to his second career U.S. Open semifinal.

Rafael Nadal defeated fellow Spaniard Fernando Verdasco 7-5 6-3 6-4 in a match that never seemed like a close contest, in the second men’s quarterfinal match.

Day 12

The women’s semifinal matches were only featured in this day. Last’s runner up Caroline Wozniacki was upset by Vera Zvonareva. On important points, Wozniacki made careless and uncharacteristic mistakes, which eventually cost her the match. After reaching Wimbledon back in July, Zvonareva advanced to her second consecutive Grand Slam final.

In a close encounter that ended with a 4-6 7-6(2) 6-4 score, defending champion Kim Clijsters defeated Venus Williams. In the third set, Clijsters showed some real clutch with a lob winner to take a 5-4 lead and then a backhand winner on match point.

NFL: Cleveland Browns vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers Preview

September 10, 2010

The Cleveland Browns will take on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to start off the 2010 NFL season on Sunday. Truth be told, these teams are not nearly towards the top of the NFC. This game will feature two of the teams that are expected to finish towards

the bottom of the league.

The good news for these two struggling organizations is that one of them will get to start off the season with a win. A win could go a long ways towards giving one of these teams the momentum that they need to improve upon their seasons last year.

The Browns have a very apparent problem with their team: They are starting Jake Delhomme. Delhomme was the quarterback for the Panthers for years and did not finish well. He really struggled towards the end of his tenure in Carolina and showed no signs of bouncing back. If the Browns are relying on him to win games they will be in for a long season.

It seems like the Bucs have been mired in mediocrity for years now. They have a young quarterback at the helm now that may be able to rescue them out in time. Unfortunately it does not look like he is ready to carry the team to the playoffs just yet. The Bucs will need a miracle to take place if they are to have any chance at making a playoff run in 2010.

This game will be an important one for each team and for the NFL betting odds too as they may not have many more chances at victory for the rest of the season.

The Wildcats vs. The Rockets – Match Preview – College Football

September 4, 2010

To open up the season on Friday night, the Arizona Wildcats will take on the Toledo Rockets. With what looks to be a bit of a lopsided matchup, these two teams will start the season. The isn’t a popular one at the NCAAF lines too.

From the Pac-10, the Arizona Wildcats are a team. In college football, the Pac-10 is known as one of the top conferences. For the national championship or other BCS bowl games, the conference puts out teams that are perennial contenders. The Wildcats managed to win 8 games while only losing 5 on the season, even in this sort of a conference while only losing 5 on the season. Against those strong teams in the league, the Wildcats went 6-3 in conference play.

The Rockets in the meanwhile did not have such a great season. In the MAC-west, play the Rockets. A league of high notoriety is not the team MAC. Than the other conferences in football, the competition is generally a bit lower and the top teams are often able to feed off of the bottom teams.

On the season, even in the MAC the Rockets only managed to win 5 of their 12 games. They managed to win 3 out of 8 games in their conference play. They will be a team that will keep up with the Arizona Wildcats is not suggested by this sort of performance.

Wildcats are by no means guaranteed to win, although they will be the favorites. For having up and down seasons, they have been known for and they have never shown the same consistency as many of the teams in the Pac-10. Look for each team to prove that they are a real threat in 2010.

College Football: UL Lafayette vs. Georgia

September 3, 2010

The Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns will square off against the Georgia Bulldogs in the season opener that will take place on the 4th of September. The game will be played in Georgia as Louisiana tries to come and pull the upset.

The Bulldogs are a solid team every year. Last season the team was led by quarterback Joe Cox. Cox had a solid season and will be difficult to replace. There are some things that could improve with the loss of Cox however.

Cox was known to make a few too many turnovers as he threw 15 interceptions last season. That isn’t a terrible number, but there is a good chance that someone could step into this role and do a better job of taking care of the ball than he did during his time at Georgia. The Bulldogs will start the season with a top 25 ranking and will have hopes of climbing up the charts from the beginning.

The Ragin’ Cajuns are coming off of a 6-6 season. The team went 4-4 in the Sun Belt conference in 2009. The Cajuns will need a bit more from their running game this season. Last year their leading rusher did not even manage to rush for 500 yards. The Cajuns will need a more consistent running game to control the clock.

By controlling the clock they will be able to protect the leads that they build over the season. Unfortunately this is difficult to do without a running game that is consistent.
