Boston Celtics Will Take On Miami Heat On Saturday

May 5, 2011

Miami HeatOn Saturday, the Boston Celtics will host the Miami Heat on their home court. This series may be a sweep by the Heat otherwise it is critical that they make a statement.

In NBA betting odds, Boston is a 3-point favorite.

In Game 2, the Boston Celtics have had no answer for two of the Heat’s big three. While Dwyane Wade stepped up and scored 28 points and eight rebounds in the decisive 102-91 victory, LeBron James tallied 35 points and seven rebounds.

In this game, the Celtics were beaten on the boards and from the outside. Ray Allen scored a pitiful seven total points in 34 minutes as he was only one for two from behind the three point arc. Team leader Rajon Rondo led all Celtics scorers with 20 points as Paul Pierce only scored 13 points in this game.

They will have to focus on stepping up their defense on James and Wade along the perimeter and make someone else beat them with the Celtics coming home.

The Heat also had the edge in the battle of the bench players. Joel Anthony was a key body on the floor for the Heat in Game 2 although he did not score many points. It will be a long game for the older Celtics if he can be a force in Game 3.

The simple question coming into Game 3 is, Will the Celtics be able to use the extra day off to get healthy and take a stand in Game 3? Even though they will need to find their legs or this series will effectively be over in four or five games, they will have the home court advantage.

Friday Clash Between Los Angeles Dodgers And Chicago Cubs

April 19, 2011

Los Angeles DodgersThis weekend the Los Angeles Dodgers will battle against the Chicago Cubs. The series will take place in Chicago and this will be a 3 game series.

To win the 2011 World Series, MLB odds have The Dodgers at 40-1 and the Cubs at 45-1.

As they are both barely under the .500 mark on the year these teams are both struggling this season. Even though they are below .500 while playing on the road, both teams are .500 at home. In the series this should give the Cubs a slight advantage.

The Dodgers have actually been one of the worst teams in their division in terms of ERA while they are known for having a solid pitching staff. Compared to the 52 runs they have scored so far they have allowed 78 runs on the season. If they hope to take this series they will need their bats to pick up and their pitching to be more effective.

Although the Cubs have at least had more success on offense than the Dodgers, they are suffering from some of the same issues that the Dodgers are. For this series the Cubs will send Coleman, Dumpster and Zambian to the mound. Although Dumpster and Zambian are veterans and have had should stabilize as the season progresses, none of these pitchers have been especially good this season.

On the mound the Dodgers will have Billingsley, Lilly and Kuroda. Although Billingsley has been up and down this season, he is seen by many to be an ace caliber pitcher. If the Dodgers hope to compete for the playoffs this season they need him to step up.

Phoenix Suns Will Take On San Antonio Spurs On Sunday

March 31, 2011

The San Antonio Spurs and Phoenix Suns are focused on finishing the season strong with the 2011 NBA playoffs just approaching. When it comes to the post-season race both teams are in completely different positions though.

In basketball betting odds while the Suns are at 40-1, San Antonio has slipped to 8-1 to win the NBA title

The Spurs will cruise to the playoffs as they have had the best record in the league for most of the season. When it comes to making the playoffs meanwhile, the Suns are hanging on thin ropes right now. It seemed that Phoenix would be a contender for the post-season, by the end of February. The Suns have dropped out of the top eight of the Western Conference recently as they had disappointing performances in March though.

The game will have different meanings for each team when the Suns and Spurs clash Sunday (1 pm ET, ABC). Every victory is precious and gets the Suns closer to the playoffs for Phoenix. Conversely, by the outcome of Sunday’s game the Spurs route to the playoffs will not be affected.

The Spurs will probably still want to impress the home crowd on Sunday, although they can afford to slack off. The Spurs will be confident playing at the AT&T Center, given the fact that San Antonio won both previous meetings against the Phoenix.

Both teams will clash once again in several weeks which will be the final regular season match for each team and it is quite interesting. The Spurs could potentially face the Suns in the playoffs, and these two games in April will give great previews on the potential post-season clashes with that in mind.

For the Suns in the last few games, Steve Nash hasn’t been a threatening offensive force and this is something that must change if Phoenix wants to leave the court with victories. For the first time this season the Spurs have recently suffered a 4 game losing streak and this has hurt the team’s confidence. On Sunday it is also something that the Suns can exploit.

Weekend Clash Between Atlanta Hawks And New Jersey Nets

March 22, 2011

This weekend, the New Jersey Nets will head to Atlanta Hawks to battle against the Hawks. In this game the Hawks will be the home team. By going 21-14 in games played in Atlanta, the Hawks have been a solid team at home this season. The New Jersey Nets will be heavily disadvantaged in this game as they are not much of a road team. While playing on the road this season they are 4-29.

In NBA Futures Betting the Hawks at 100-1 and the Nets at 5000-1, both teams are non-factors to win the 2011 NBA Championship.

As Deron Williams had the team on a solid winning streak the Nets looked like they were on their way up last week. The Nets have now lost 3 games in a row as they have since fallen again. As Deron Williams has been struggling through a wrist injury and may not be available for this game, the Nets could be in big trouble in this game.

Even though the Hawks will even more heavily favored if Williams is unable to play in this game, they will be the favorites in this game. The Nets will struggle to create good shots offensively without him as Williams helps the team in so many ways.

The Hawks may or may not have a sense of urgency in this game as they are probably set in the 5th spot in the Eastern Conference. Either the Hawks could try to find some rest for their starters before the playoffs approach or they could either try to build some momentum entering the playoffs.

So long as the Hawks are able to play their normal game, they should be able to take home a victory in this game.

NCAAB March Madness Betting

February 2, 2011

The college basketball season is already two thirds of the way through which means it’s time to look at picks for March Madness.

The last four years have seen a top seed in one of the brackets prevailing with the Duke Blue Devils in 2010, the North Caolina Tar Heels in 2009, the Kansas Jayhawks in 2008 and the Florida Gators in 2007 all entering the tournaments as top seeds in their respective brackets.

If you want to make any money on March Madness odds in the futures market, you need to pick teams that are in a good position to finish in one of the top seeds. With the college basketball betting season already two thirds of the way done, we’re in a good position to look at the March Madness futures for teams that are likely to finish as top teams. In particular, we look for teams that are in position now to qualify as a top team and teams in position to make a late charge and take top spot.

Top Teams Right Now

The Duke Blue Devils may not be the top team in the League, but at +320 they have the best odds. While the Blue Devils are the defending champions, it is hard to justify taking them at this number. The ACC is down this year and they really haven’t proven that much. They do have a win over a number two team Kansas State, but Kansas State has since fallen hard.

They don’t have any big tests on the horizon, so don’t be surprised to see them enter the tournament as one of the top seeded teams which means you can almost book them in the Elite Eight which is a big advantage, but their odds are just too low to justify spending any money in an event as unpredictable as March Madness.

The number one team in the nation, the Ohio State Buckeyes, comes in next at +420. A good case can be made for the top team in the nation. They have overcome a number of tests including overcoming an 18-point deficit against the Minnesota Golden Gophers. They have a number of big tests left, so don’t be surprised to see them lose a game or two, but the competition will be good for them once the spring tournament starts.

The Kansas Jayhawks look tempting at +1000 because of their one-loss record and strong play annually, but they haven’t faced a lot of tests and seem like the best candidate for falling off with three more games against ranked teams.

A better bet is the lone team to beat the Jayhawks, the Texas Longhorns at +2000. The Longhorns have faced more ranked teams and, in most cases, prevailed. They also don’t have any ranked teams left on their schedule which puts them in a pretty good position to take the Big 12.

Teams Making a Late Charge

The Pittsburgh Panthers +2000 are the strong bet to take a top seed from one of the four aforementioned teams. The Panthers have a win over Texas and have played well despite a fairly strong schedule. The biggest challenge for the Panthers will be the Villanova Wildcats who were one of the top teams for most of the season before falling off badly last week. If they get their game back together, they will be a big threat as these two teams have two meetings left.

A strong alternative to the Panthers, depending on how worried you are about Villanova, is the UConn Huskies at +2000 who have already proven themselves against a number of ranked teams, but their remaining schedule is full of pitfalls starting tomorrow with another team that has dropped precipitously, the Syracuse Orange.

Texas is by far the best college basketball bet based on risk and reward. Their path from here to the Elite Eight is the easiest and they have enough wins over quality opposition to believe they have a chance to go all the way once they get there.

UConn and Pittsburgh both pay the same as Texas, but Texas has a much easier path from here forward and represents a better value.

Duke and Ohio State are solid choices, but not worth the investment in my opinion while Kansas still has a lot to prove.

Territorial Cup Preview: Arizona State Sun Devils at Arizona Wildcats

November 30, 2010

The annual rivalry game between the Arizona Wildcats and the Arizona Sun Devils, the Territorial Cup, gets the national spotlight on Thursday, December 2, 2010 with the Wildcats needing a win to secure a quality bowl invitation after limping down the stretch run dropping three straight.

The NCAA football odds list the Wildcats as six-point betting favorites with an over/under of 55.

This game features the two best passing offenses in the Pac 10 with Arizona’s 314.0 yards per game good for ninth in the nation and Arizona State’s 288.2 yards being good enough for twelfth.

Both of these teams have rather middling defenses with the Sun Devils being better against the run, but the Wildcats having a slight advantage in points (20.8-24.6) and total yards (339.5-362.5). Expect both teams to be effective moving the ball.

The Arizona State Sun Devils will be without their starting quarterback Steven Threet due to a concussion, but backup Brock Osweiler looked good in relief picking up 380 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions against the UCLA Bruins last week in a 55-34 blowout.

The Arizona Wildcats meanwhile has struggled to three straight losses falling to the Stanford Cardinal (13), USC Trojans and Oregon Ducks (1). Stanford and Oregon clearly out-classed them and USC used the run to control the game and eke out the win, something that the Wildcats won’t have to worry about against the Sun Devils.

The Sun Devils are 6-2-1 ATS this season while the Wildcats are 3-7 ATS. While losses to the top teams in the Pac 10 are not a reason to panic, Arizona is has a rather large number to cover against a team that they don’t have any big matchup advantage over.

While an outright upset seems a little unlikely, the six points is too much to ignore for any CFB betting enthusiast.

NHL – New York Rangers – Season Preview

October 5, 2010

The New York Rangers, sports betting favorite lost in a shootout on the last day of the season to the Philadelphia Flyers, denying the Rangers a playoff bid in 2009-2010 season and they hope that their 2010-2011 season ends much better. The Rangers appear to be one of the better teams in the Eastern Conference, on paper.

Key Additions:

With the additions of Alexander Frolov and Todd White, the Rangers are looking to bolster their offensive lines. At the goaltender position, Martin Biron will provide quality depth, as he backs up one of the game’s best net minders in Henrik Lundqvist.

Key Losses:

Forward Olli Jokinen is decided not to re-sign by the Rangers after acquiring him at the trade deadline. Often struggling to get on the score sheet, Jokinen did not live up to the expectations of the Rangers front office.

This season, the Rangers are hoping to spread the offense around so that star forward Marion Gaborik does not have to shoulder the load of the scoring. Leaving Gaborik as their only scoring threat on many nights, many times last season other forwards did not contribute enough points.

If the Rangers hope to make the post season this year, another aspect where they need to improve is on defense. From the likes of Michael Del Zotto and Matt Gilroy, who now have a season of experience under their belts, head coach John Tortorella hopes to get more consistent play. The New York Rangers have a good shot at making the playoffs in 2010-2011, with more balanced scoring and consistent play from their defensemen.

MLB Preview: Boston Red Sox vs. New York Yankees

August 5, 2010

The New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox look to renew their storied rivalry on Friday, Aug. 6 with a four-game series in the Bronx. The Boston Red Sox are struggling as of late having fallen 7.5 games out of first place in the AL East. Injuries have played a large role in Boston’s demise this year with Victor Martinez, Jacoby Ellsbury, Mike Lowell, and Dustin Pedroia all having spent time on the DL recently.

Boston is hoping to get a few of these players back this week, when they play the reeling Detroit Tigers and Cleveland Indians, who are in last place in the AL Central, so that they can make up a few games in the standings before facing the Yankees.

As is it always seems when the Yankees and Red Sox square off, the games next weekend will feature some quality pitching match ups. Scheduled starters for the Red Sox include MLB lines stars, Clay Bucholz, John Lackey, Josh Beckett, and Jon Lester, while the Yankees will counter with Javier Vazquez, C.C. Sabathia, A.J. Burnett, and Dustin Moseley.

The Yankees lead the season series 5-3, and will be looking to improve upon their AL best 34-16 home record. The Red Sox are a pedestrian 28-24 on the road this year, which would lead one to believe they will have their hands full next week against the Yanks.

NFL minicamps: Carolina Panthers

July 14, 2010

The Carolina Panthers held a minicamp for the whole team from April 30 to May 2. The minicamp was held in Charlotte, North Carolina. Instead of the camp being seen as a battle for depth chart positioning, it was seen as more of an opportunity for rookies mingle with the vets and get acquainted with NFL football.

Cornerback Richard Marshall was absent from the minicamp. The free agent received an offer that he felt was less than he was worth. He did not sign the offer sheet, and thus was not obligated to attend the practice.

The Panthers did have some positive news regarding their secondary as a result of the minicamp. Sixth round selection Jordan Pugh was a pleasant surprise for the Panthers. The ball-hawking defensive back was everywhere, breaking up and picking off passes.

In the second round of the 2010 NFL Draft, the Panthers selected quarterback Jimmy Clausen out of Notre Dame. The quarterback situation is up for grabs in Carolina as a result of the release of long-time quarterback Jake Delhomme. Matt Moore inherited the starting spot, but Clausen held his own during the workouts and has expressed his intent to be the team’s starter.

With the departure of defensive end Julius Peppers, many are concerned about the state of Carolina’s defense. Linebacker Thomas Davis will have a lot to do with how the defense performs, and he performed well at minicamp. His success is a surprise to the team. About six months ago, he blew out his knee against the New Orleans Saints.

Chicago Blackhawks win Stanley Cup

June 11, 2010

The Philadelphia Flyers and Chicago Blackhawks faced off in Game 6 of the 2010 Stanley Cup Finals on June 8th in Philadelphia. Coming into Game 6, Chicago was leading the series 3-2. Philadelphia was playing in front of their home crowd and was one win away from forcing a Game 7. That did not happen, as Chicago won 4-3 in overtime to capture the Stanley Cup.

Chicago’s goalie, Antti Niemi, was not overly impressive in Game 6, but got the job done. He made 21 saves in victory. Michael Leighton, Philadelphia’s goalie, had a more impressive game stat-wise, making 37 saves, but it was all in vain as he took the loss.

Four different players scored for Chicago, including Patrick Kane, who made the winning goal in overtime. Scott Hartnell was very impressive for Philadelphia, making 2 goals. It was a great game, full of back and forth action. No one could compare to Patrick Kane, though, who was definitely the hero of Game 6. Not only did he have an incredible goal in overtime, he also had two assists. He made what will be remembered as one of the most historic goals in Blackhawks’ history.

It was a long wait between Stanley Cup victories for the Chicago Blackhawks, but they finally got the job done. It had been 49 years since Chicago had last won a Stanley Cup. Regardless of what happens from here, the 2010 Chicago Blackhawks will forever have their place in history, thanks in large part to a great Game 6.
