Horse Racing: Hawkeyethenoo Wins Blue Square Bet Stewards’ Cup

August 6, 2012

Hawkeyethenoo just edged out Imperial Guest in another tight finish at Blue Square Bet Stewards’ Cup at Glorious Goodwood, enabling Grand National-winning jockey Graham Lee adding one of the biggest betting races on the Flat to his curriculum vitae.

The judge again had to take a look at the photo before giving the verdict to the 9-1 chance much to the delight of his jockey, a day after two races at the track ended as dead-heats.

Earlier in the year, Lee shocked the racing world when announcing he was switching to ride on the Flat and he continued that it is his first season on the Flat and he [Hawkeyethenoo] has taken me to some big places, to Royal Ascot and the Wokingham and the July Cup.

For the eighth time, the son of Hawk Wing was winning and his trainer Jim Goldie said that it is terrific for them. He has been very unlucky this year so it is a great race to get some luck in.

As trainer George Margarson again went close to nabbing a big handicap, the 25-1 chance going down by a nose, Connections of Imperial Guest can also count themselves as unlucky.

Following his Goodwood victory on Saturday, Hawkeyethenoo could contest both the Betfred Sprint Cup at Haydock and the Ayr Gold Cup next month. Trainer Goldie admits the Ayr Gold Cup is at the forefront of his mind. He reports his charge has arrived back at his Glasgow base none the worse and as a proud Scotsman.

Goldie said that Hawkeyethenoo has got home last night and he seems fine. He’s eaten up and he’s nice and relaxed. He added that he has been banging on the door and it was nice to get the luck in running this time. Everything went to plan. It was handy they left that gap on the far side and he picked up really well when it mattered. He probably idled a wee bit in front.

Goldie said that Hawkeyethenoo could go to Haydock next, but they will have to see what the handicapper does. There is a certain race at Ayr they would obviously like to win. He added that Hawkeyethenoo is probably a better horse on good to firm ground and their chances of getting that at Ayr are probably limited, but he’ll have the entry and they will see nearer the time.

Goldie said that they will see how Hawkeyethenoo is this week, but there is three weeks from now until Haydock and then the Ayr Gold Cup is a fortnight after that, so it’s possible he could do both. He hopes that the handicapper isn’t too hard on him as they finished in a bit of a heap yesterday.

Chelsea Suffers Defeat – Ends Hope of Top Four Premier League Finish

May 9, 2012

Chelsea suffered a 4-1 defeat by Liverpool thereby ending their hopes of a top four Premier League finish. They will have to win the Champions League final if they are to compete in next season’s edition.

Chelsea were 3-0 behind inside half an hour at Anfield following an own-goal from Michael Essien and goals from Jordan Henderson and Daniel Agger, just three days after beating Liverpool 2-1 in the FA Cup final at Wembley.

Jonjo Shelvey ended any hope of a comeback with his first Premier League goal after Ramires scored for Chelsea early in the second half. Unless Chelsea beat Bayern Munich at the German club’s ground in the final on May 19, England’s top four clubs will enter next term’s Champions League. A win for Chelsea will deprive the team in fourth of a place in the preliminary round.

Chelsea will now finish in sixth spot and this defeat meant the top four was beyond the reach of them. With just three on offer for beating already relegated Blackburn in their final league match of the season, they are left five points behind fourth-placed Tottenham.

A win in the Champions League will save the job for interim Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo, and to make sure that the Blues stay in Europe next season as a 4-1 crush against Liverpool at the Anfield on Tuesday killed their even outside chance of a top four finish. Against the Red, Di Matteo played an under strength team, keeping their Champions League final against Bayern Munich on May 19 in his mind.

Since Roman Abramovich took control, it is the worst final position Chelsea have ever had. After a selection gamble failed to pay off, even the much-mocked Europa League now beckons. Despite Di Matteo’s team beginning the night still in contention for a top-four berth, he said he had no regrets about making eight changes from his Cup final side for the game at Anfield.

Di Matteo had rested the likes of Didier Drogba, Juan Mata, Ashley Cole and Frank Lampard and said he has no regrets. He added that the effort was there but they came up against an inspired Liverpool side. He further said that his side had some very intense games, the last one three days ago and it is hard to keep getting yourself going every three days. He said that since he has been in charge, his team has played every three days and it has been a big ask and a big demand. He thought with fresh legs and new energy they could have had a better chance.

NCAAB March Madness Betting

February 2, 2011

The college basketball season is already two thirds of the way through which means it’s time to look at picks for March Madness.

The last four years have seen a top seed in one of the brackets prevailing with the Duke Blue Devils in 2010, the North Caolina Tar Heels in 2009, the Kansas Jayhawks in 2008 and the Florida Gators in 2007 all entering the tournaments as top seeds in their respective brackets.

If you want to make any money on March Madness odds in the futures market, you need to pick teams that are in a good position to finish in one of the top seeds. With the college basketball betting season already two thirds of the way done, we’re in a good position to look at the March Madness futures for teams that are likely to finish as top teams. In particular, we look for teams that are in position now to qualify as a top team and teams in position to make a late charge and take top spot.

Top Teams Right Now

The Duke Blue Devils may not be the top team in the League, but at +320 they have the best odds. While the Blue Devils are the defending champions, it is hard to justify taking them at this number. The ACC is down this year and they really haven’t proven that much. They do have a win over a number two team Kansas State, but Kansas State has since fallen hard.

They don’t have any big tests on the horizon, so don’t be surprised to see them enter the tournament as one of the top seeded teams which means you can almost book them in the Elite Eight which is a big advantage, but their odds are just too low to justify spending any money in an event as unpredictable as March Madness.

The number one team in the nation, the Ohio State Buckeyes, comes in next at +420. A good case can be made for the top team in the nation. They have overcome a number of tests including overcoming an 18-point deficit against the Minnesota Golden Gophers. They have a number of big tests left, so don’t be surprised to see them lose a game or two, but the competition will be good for them once the spring tournament starts.

The Kansas Jayhawks look tempting at +1000 because of their one-loss record and strong play annually, but they haven’t faced a lot of tests and seem like the best candidate for falling off with three more games against ranked teams.

A better bet is the lone team to beat the Jayhawks, the Texas Longhorns at +2000. The Longhorns have faced more ranked teams and, in most cases, prevailed. They also don’t have any ranked teams left on their schedule which puts them in a pretty good position to take the Big 12.

Teams Making a Late Charge

The Pittsburgh Panthers +2000 are the strong bet to take a top seed from one of the four aforementioned teams. The Panthers have a win over Texas and have played well despite a fairly strong schedule. The biggest challenge for the Panthers will be the Villanova Wildcats who were one of the top teams for most of the season before falling off badly last week. If they get their game back together, they will be a big threat as these two teams have two meetings left.

A strong alternative to the Panthers, depending on how worried you are about Villanova, is the UConn Huskies at +2000 who have already proven themselves against a number of ranked teams, but their remaining schedule is full of pitfalls starting tomorrow with another team that has dropped precipitously, the Syracuse Orange.

Texas is by far the best college basketball bet based on risk and reward. Their path from here to the Elite Eight is the easiest and they have enough wins over quality opposition to believe they have a chance to go all the way once they get there.

UConn and Pittsburgh both pay the same as Texas, but Texas has a much easier path from here forward and represents a better value.

Duke and Ohio State are solid choices, but not worth the investment in my opinion while Kansas still has a lot to prove.

World Cup Preview: Stage 2, Uruguay vs. South Korea

June 25, 2010

Uruguay stormed through the first round in the 2010 World Cup and will now move on to the round of 16 as the winners of Group A. They will face World Cup odds favorite, South Korea on Saturday at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in the first game of the second round. Kickoff is scheduled for 10:00 AM ET. South Korea qualified after finishing second in Group B.

Uruguay has been one of the most impressive teams of the tournament. Their experienced defensive unit has played magnificently through three games. Uruguay’s back line includes Diego Lugano, Maxi Pereira, and Diego Godin. All of whom play for good European clubs and they combined with goalkeeper Fernando Muslera to give up zero goals in group play.

In addition to their solid defenders, Uruguay boasts one of the most feared attacking duos in the tournament. Forwards Diego Forlan and Luis Suarez placed in the top five in goals and assists in qualifying and picked up where they left off in the first round. Forlan scored two goals in Uruguay’s 3-0 win over host South Africa. In Uruguay’s clinching 1-0 win over Mexico, Suarez scored the team’s only goal.

South Korea has been a regular at the World Cup, but they failed to move past the first round in all but one of their seven previous appearances. The one time they moved on was in 2002 when they co-hosted the tournament with Japan. After a draw, a loss, and a win in group play this year, they finished second in their group and will play in the second round for the first time on foreign soil.

South American teams have been impressive so far in the tournament. They have nine wins, two draws, and just one loss. When South Korea faced South American Argentina in their second game, they gave up four goals in a 4-1 loss. Uruguay has represented South America well and will be favored in this game to continue South America’s dominance.

World Cup Preview: Italy vs. Paraguay, June 14

June 11, 2010

Italy and Paraguay will face off in Group F of the 2010 World Cup on June 14th. This game will probably be the most significant game that Group F will have.

These two squads are the overwhelming favorites to advance out of this group which also includes Slovakia and New Zealand. Some people give Slovakia an outside chance to advance to the next stage, but New Zealand has been all but counted out for advancement.

Italy is the defending champion team, but is ranked outside of the top 10 in the world in many rankings. Fortunately for them they have drawn an easy group. This match between Paraguay and Italy will likely be used to decide who the winner of Group F will be.

These two teams both have solid defenses. Paraguay may have the edge on the defensive end. Italy on the other hand has a solid offensive attack that is definitely more formidable than Paraguay. The key for Paraguay will be their defensive containment. Paraguay does not have the type of offense that can go goal for goal in a shootout. They need a low scoring game in which they control the tempo. If they let Italy get a lot of shots on goal, it will probably spell their demise.

Both of these teams will be contenders in the World Cup, but this game will go a long way towards building confidence for each squad. If a team leaves feeling as though they are the best team advancing from Group F, then they will have a lot more confidence in later rounds.

History of the Cincinnati Reds

May 18, 2010

In 1882, as a charter member of the American Association (AA), the Cincinnati Reds began play. Then they were known as the Cincinnati Red Stockings.

In 1866 as the first team fully encompassed of pros, the Red Stockings were formed.

To play in Cincinnati as the Red Stockings, the Cincinnati Reds as we know them now were the third team. In 1880, a second Red Stockings team was a charter member of the NL but was expelled. In the American Association, the third Cincinnati Red Stockings team played its first eight years.

In 1919, the Reds won their first NL pennant. In the now infamous 1919 World Series, they defeated the Chicago White Sox.

When it was revealed that the White Sox had purposely thrown the World Series in a gambling scheme, the excitement over the 1919 World Series was dulled to an extent.

It would be 21 years before they captured another World Series and 20 years before the Reds would capture another NL pennant. Cincinnati repeats as NL Champions in 1940.

Cincinnati adopted the nickname “Redlegs” in 1953 and remained the same until 1958 when they back to being the Reds.

The Reds, MLB lines star, would go on their longest World Series drought in franchise history (35 years), after winning the 1940 World Series.

During the 70s, The Cincinnati Reds best stretch came, when they were known as “The Big Red Machine.”

They won the NL Pennant again in 1972 but lost to the Oakland Athletics in an exciting seven-game series.

For the Big Red Machine, the years 1975 and 1976 were the best as they won back-to-back World Series.

The Boston Red Sox’s Carlton Fisk’s famous 12th inning shot which made the 1975 World Series memorable one as the 12th inning shot hit the foul pole that forced a game 7. In 1976, Cincinnati won on an RBI single by second baseman Joe Morgan in game 7.

Under new manager Lou Piniella in 1990, the unheralded Reds surprised the major leagues by leading the NL from wire-to-wire. The franchise got their fifth World Series b them.

Scenario of Tempted to Tapit: Steve Klesaris

April 8, 2010

It would be the first horse trained by Steve Klesaris to do so if Tempted to Tapit starts in the Kentucky Derby on May 1. When gray gelding won at Aqueduct by 11 ½ lengths, he became a Derby hopeful on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Tapit, winner of the Grade 1 Wood Memorial and ninth-place finisher at the Kentucky Derby sired the horse. Tempting Note, a mare of 1996 Belmont Stakes winner Editor’s Note keeps him out. He was purchased for $18,000 by Midway Stable at the 2008 Keeneland September yearling sale.

A multi-generational family involved with horse racing also belongs to Klesaris. Before becoming a jokey’s agent his brother Robert was a trainer and his father Peter Klesaris is also a trainer. He saddled his first winner when he was 18 at Suffolk Downs in 1978.
Three starts have been made by Tempted to Tapit as a juvenile. Second place in two of those races have been finished by him. Klesaris stated that the difference between his second-place finishes and his January 18 first-place finish was that he maintained his focus throughout the race.

Third in the Grade III $800,000 Sunland Park Derby last Sunday in New Mexico was finished by him. Second in the Grade III Risen Star at Fair Grounds was Tempted to Tapit in his first stake in February.

Tempted to Tapit is not among the top 20 3-year olds with at least six Derby prep horse betting races to be run in the next two weeks. Currently 27th in earnings with $156,000 is Tempted to Tapit. As a result, he will most likely not be contending for the Kentucky Derby.

Houston Texans: Off-season Picks

April 1, 2010

It is a huge disadvantage for the Houston Texans as they are playing in the same division as Peyton Manning. Their secondary has the challenge of facing the proficient passer twice a year. As the Texans go into the 2010 NFL Draft,  it makes the secondary even more of a priority as the standout CB Dunta Robinson recently signed with the Atlanta Falcons.

As the Texans will be looking to add a cornerback and a safety, the secondary is their most obvious priority in the draft.  With Steve Slaton coming off of spine surgery, they will also be looking for a big running back who can carry some of the workload.

Boise State CB Kyle Wilson will be expected to be The Texans’s first round pick (20th overall) on.  Wilson has seen his stock rise significantly as a result of an impressive senior bowl and combine workout as he had a successful college career.

Getting a running back is a top priority in the draft as have been emphasized by many people from the front office of the Texans organization. Don’t be surprised if they use their second round pick (51st overall) on Tate although Georgia Tech’s Jonathan Dwyer may seem like the more obvious selection and Auburn’s Ben Tate is a good fit with their system.Checkout all Football blog for latest updates on Houston Texans.

For their third round pick (81st overall), the Texans will likely use on another player in the secondary. Some of the  top-rated safetys projected to go in the third round are Safetys Morgan Burnett (Georgia Tech), Major Wright (Florida), and Chad Jones (LSU).  They may use this pick to take another cornerback, such as Akwasi Owusu-Ansah of IUP who is also a tremendous kick returner.

The Masters Tournament Preview

March 29, 2010

A professional golf tournament played in the United States is the Masters. The Masters or the US Masters is another name used for it. It is one of the 4 major championships on the PGA Tour. It is played in the first full week of April and is the 1st of the 4 major tournaments to take place each year with The US Open, The British Open and the PGA Championship following later in the year.

The Augusta National Invitation Tournament was the first Masters Tournament and was first played on March 22, 1934. 1939 is the year when the present name was given to the tournament.

Several traditions easily recognize the Masters Tournament. The golf betting winner is given green jackets each year; sadly the jackets must be given back to the clubhouse after a year. Also the betting golf winner of the Masters is invited to participate in all of the subsequent major tournaments for the next five years.

An official stop on the PGA Tour is the Masters, thus the prize money won in the Open by PGA Tour Members goes toward their total on the money list.

The location always remains the same for Masters Tournament. Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Ga is the place where it is played.

Some of the records of the Masters Tournament include:
Oldest winner: Jack Nicklaus (46 years, 82 days), 1986
Youngest winner: Tiger Woods (21 years, 104 days), 1997
Most top 10 finishes: 22, Jack Nicklaus
Lowest winning score: 270 (-18), Tiger Woods, 2007
Widest margin of victory: 12 strokes, Tiger Woods, 2007

Survivor Betting Odds: Is Russell Evil?

November 17, 2009

I am a huge Survivor fan, have been since day 1. There have not been very many episodes that I have not seen over the 19 seasons of this Reality/Game show. Some of the seasons have been pretty boring at times with really boring groups of people playing the game. In spite of this I have been pretty faithful to the show and powered through regardless.

When Survivor Samoa started I thought to myself this looks like another pretty lame group of people, no clear Rupert type in the group. As the show went on we get introduced to this no neck brawler looking dude named Russell who looks more like an MMA fighter than an oil millionaire.

Turns out that this Russell cat is an even bigger cad than Rupert. Back in Season 7, Pearl Islands, Rupert stole the other team’s shoes and sold them, which I thought was brilliant but as it turns out Russell out did himself when he burned personal items and emptied the water bottles of his own tribe mates. The man is an evil genius as far as I am concerned and is the breathe of fresh air this show needed.

Not only is this guy playing a really great strategic game but he is also playing a smart game by using his head to find not one but two hidden immunity idols without the benefit of a single clue. What can a fan like myself say other than, “Dude!

Given his skill at manipulation I would like to think that Russell Hantz should be the hands down favourite to win Survivor Samoa but one never knows how these things are going to turn out. If you are a fan of betting on reality shows you can place a bet for the winner of season 19 Survivor over at your local sportsbook. I have posted their betting odds below going in to episode 10.

Russell Hantz +325
Mick Trimming +250
Shannon Waters +700
Dave Ball +550
John Fincher +900
Laura Morett +800
Jaison Robinson +450
Brett Clouser +750
Monica Padilla +700
Natalie White +450

Here is a great resource for everything Survivor.
